Pickering Oct 2011

Once again were were billeted at the very pleasant Pickering Castle and warmly welcomed by our English Heritage Hosts.This is an excellent event to end the season with. We had a good turn out and the weather was very kind to us. We had the usual table top and weapons displays. Corporal Dixon and Private Pyper were kept busy answering the many questions about the various weapons on show. Corporal Dixon also had a couple of drill sessions with some of the younger visitors. The training display was run twice on each day. The scenario was expanded this year to include a little bit of house clearing. This extended the run time of the display and was a bit more understandable for the crowd. Commentaries were given on Saturday by Private Pyper and on Sunday by Corporal Dixon.

Thanks to the ladies who manned the display and help man the enemy position.

Rufford 2011

There was a really good turn out from the East Yorks for their fourth year at Rufford. There appeared to be more displays than last year but still the emphasis was on the British. As usual we were required to form the Guard of Honour for Churchill and Montgomery, both of whom gave excellent stirring speeches. Also in attendance was the local Mayor who was there to officially open the event. This can only bode well for the continuation of this excellent show.

Mr Cooper had put together a training exercise that managed to cleverly incorporated all the various participating groups, and gave the audience a clear picture on how the different arms of the British Army worked together.

The ladies spent both days busily mending kit. I have to say we are always most grateful to have instant kit repair on tap. The ladies had also prepared for the event buy baking an excellent selection of cakes. We would like to thank the Ladies for taking on the job of manning the large display while the men were otherwise occupied.

All in all an excellent and enjoyable weekend.

July 16/17th Kelmarsh Hall - Festival of History - English Heritage

This year saw the East Yorks sited up the Hill. This position gave us a good view over the rest of the site but a bit away from the public. There was some rain on Saturday morning. However the weather brightened up by the afternoon and the day remained warm and sunny. The battle on Saturday was chaotic and short due to the Boer War lasting longer than it should have! The battle on Sunday was much better. The timing of the pyrotechnics and aircraft was spot on making for quite a spectacle. It was good to see four full sections of British infantry on the field, with the help of the Spitfire beating up the Jerry positions, the Allies carried the day. All in all we had a good and enjoyable weekend.

Ponderosa 9/10 July 2011

This was the second year that the East Yorkshire Regiment Living History Group have supported this event. There was a good turn out from the 2nd Battalion East Yorks with numbers boosted by a temporary loan of men from the 5th Battalion. We had the six pounder to man plus another trench, but even so things were a little tight with every man at his post. The weather was mixed but generally kind to us, i.e. we got the tents down and put away dry.

There were two battles, one "Eastern Front" and the other European Theatre of Operations with skirmishes going on all day, on both days. The battle on the Saturday was a little chaotic with the usual complete set of re-enactment groups on the battlefield at the same time. However there was good use of pyrotechnics allowing the 25 pounders, at one side of the display area, to "beat up" the German lines at the other. Corporal Cooper and Private Hancock managed to make the 6 pounder fire in a very convincing manner surprising everyone including the owner of the gun. The battle on the Sunday was much better.

Unfortunately the layout of the display area was a bit confused and we weren't able to involve the ladies in anything other than the tea after the battle role. However their efforts were greatly appreciated by some very hot and dusty men.

Grand Central Railway 11/12th June 2011

The East Yorks Living History Group attended the Grand Central Railway event on the weekend of the 11/12th June 2011. There were plenty of the public in attendance on the Saturday but the weather on Sunday reduced numbers somewhat. However, the group still had much interest in the display and Darren was kept busy giving talks. Here is a selection of photos with a link to more, provided by Michael.

Haworth May 15/16 2011

Corporal Lycett has provided a few pictures from the Haworth weekend, reporting that is was a somewhat colourful and exotic procession this year, if I may paraphrase him. The highlights however were the appearance of Vincent White's family and the very amusing and handsome Mr Hunter.

Ryedale Folk Museum, Easter 2011

The group had a great Easter weekend at Ryedale Folk Museum, Hutton le Hole. The weather was very hot and sunny (apart from 1 hour on Saturday night where we had thunder and lightning and hailstones the size of marbles!!!)

There was a fantastic turn out and the group was joined by the Haworth Home Guard Army Catering Corps and a contingent of civies including Land Army, WVS, Civil Defence and the woman from the ministry, promoting the virtues of offal! It wouldn't have been easter without chicks and chocolate (unfortunatly the chocolate was on ration!)

The group received briefings from the Inteligence officer on the 'enemy' and the RAF we're promoting Wings for Victory. Private Hancock was very generous and 'donated' his months wages to the appeal. Here are some photos of the event provided by Christine.

70th anniversary of the Sheffield Blitz

The event was the 70th anniversary of the Sheffield blitz. The East Yorks lads were in the city centre on the 12th Dec with a good display for the general public. Due to the interest that was generated, it was difficult to photograph the lads in action! Photos and text from Bill.

Embsay 2010

The event was well attended with a about ten men on both days. The weather was damp on Saturday but much better on Sunday. Due to the German paratroop alert we deployed the Bren team on the platform to cover the approach to the station along the track. At regular intervals a short section was sent on patrol checking station buildings and rolling stock. On Sunday a detachment was posted on the main entrance to the station yard, checking incoming vehicles and again the Bren team were deployed on the platform.

Dennis Peachy, Alf Acroyd and Vincent White all called in for a chat and a cuppa. The dance on Saturday evening stood in for Pte. Hallet's stag night. Unfortunately the evening passed without incident. On the Sunday we were treated to an excellent flypast by the BBMF Lancaster.

Crich Tramway Museum 1940's Weekend

Once again we found ourselves at Crich Tramway Museum for the 40's weekend. This weekend has the added importance of being the Veterans annual get together. Most of the veterans arrived on Saturday morning and a pleasant if wet day was had by all. The veterans took part in the parade and then the ceremony up at the Stand. The ceremony was short and to the point but very moving. Doug did the honours with the cross. Thanks must go to Tony Bryan for the ceremony and to his pals the HD pipe Band. In the evening we retired to the Moss Cottage for a good meal and good chat over a beer or two. This year the veterans ate their dinner off the newly acquired regimental mess crockery.

Leeds Rifles

The event was the Leeds Rifles Regimental Day and Bligny Day commemorative service. We provided a guard of honour for the arriving dignitaries including the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire. We also posted the sentries at the memorial during the wreath laying. Afterwards we were invited back to Harewood Barracks as the guests of Colonel Jarrett, who himself was in the East Yorkshire regiment in Palestine in the intimidate post war period, for a very good meal. Colonel Jarrett has thanked us and was impressed by our efforts.

Ponderosa 10/11 July 2010

This is a relatively new event and appears to be growing with more displays each year. The 6 pdr was a great attraction and made an excellent centre piece to the display. The weather was good to us and made sitting in a hole for the weekend a most pleasant event.

Richmond 2010

Scarborough 2010

Whilst the weather could have been kinder the Scarborough 2010 event has been very successful. The East Yorkshire Regiment Living History Group is going from strength to strength with more members and a very professional and extensive display including radio equipment and weapons. The public watched invasion practices with pyrotechnics, weapons displays and a mock invasion battle with the East Yorks outnumbering and overwhelming the enemy troops. St Georges Day Morley

Photos from the St George's Day Event held at Morley. Apparently it is the largest St Georges day event in the north of England. Ryedale 3rd and 4th April

The first official event of the 2010 calendar was held at Rydale and was also the group's Annual General Meeting. There where activities such as go-cart races, a church service and a grenade throwing competition with the Home Guard who won, again.

Steve Blackburn and Barry Pate responded to an invitation to assist with the World War II history classes for Year 4 pupils at Redwood Primary School in Waddington , Lincoln on the 17th September. Steve, in British Infantry uniform and Barry in Australian 2AIF uniform gave short presentations to the three classes and then answered the numerous and interesting questions from the charming students.

Special thanks to Andy Etherington and Dave Wilson for organising the East Yorks display at the The Victory Show this year. A superb display was set up on the Friday prior to the event by Dave and Andy. Great job guys. The event was very well attended by the public and featured excellent flying displays and a mock battle on each day. We were also privileged to meet East Yorkshire Regiment Veterans.

Normandy Trip

Once again several members of the group made the trip to Normandy in time for the 65th anniversary commemoration. The party laid wreathes to the 2nd Battalion East Yorks at the 3rd Division Memorial at La Breche d’Hermanville and at the Hermanville War Cemetery. We also spent a very moving hour listening to the stories of veteran Dennis Peachy on Sword beach where he landed. The rest of the time was spent visiting many of the huge number of sites and museums. It is difficult to remember that every inch of this ground was bitterly fought over, but the numerous Commonwealth war cemeteries bear witness to the huge cost of the success of the invasion.

English Heritage Scarborough Castle Wartime Weekend

The English Heritage Scarborough Castle 1940's Wartime Weekend held over the Bank Holiday weekend (Sat 23 - Mon 25 May) was a great success. The group was honoured to have a visit by WWII East Yorkshire Regiment Veteran Alf Ackroyd and his family (Alf's son-in-law Tony kindly took some of the photos shown here). The group presented a display of period weapons, 14-man tent, dining shelter, radio tent and pup tents, a beach assault course display, drill and other military activities and joined with the NWW2A in simulated battles. The group has an active ATS section for female members. There where flypasts of the BBMF Douglas C47 and Spitfire. Further photos will be available soon. Annual General Meeting Feb 28-March 1

The groups first event on the 2009 calender and Annual General Meeting was held in conjunction with a militaria and reenactors fair at Derby University. Group members had an opportunity to sell excess kit and stock up on needed items with the proceeds, although I suspect some spent a little more than was raised from sales! Battle Group North, Yorkshire Air Museum - 9th & 10th May 2009.

A Pre D-Day Camp

Journey back to May 1944, the Allies are nearly ready to launch the attack on Europe to free the occupied countries. As the build up of men and material continues, camps spring up across the country. Next to a small village the army has moved in, a vehicle pool stands behind the old stables, the cottages have extra guests as soldiers are billeted with families.

The village hall has been taken over by the officers as an admin post, the village green is a parade square. Tents fill the meadow behind the village.

Watch soldiers in mock battles on exercise, meet the families that welcome the troops into their own homes, experience the build up to the second front…

Rufford Park August 2008

The East Yorks were in a prominant position for the Rufford Park event which saw better than expected weather. There was an honour guard for the arrival of Prime Minister Churchill and Field Marshall Montgomery. The PM and Monty observed a joint open field training exercise with elements of the East Yorks, Duke of Wellingtons and field artillery in the afternoon.

Here is a selection of photos from the Crich 1940's weekend. An excellent dinner with the Veterans was a highlight of a successful weekend. Poor weather on the Saturday kept the crowds away but Sunday's fine weather made for a very enjoyable day. Kelmarsh Hall Event Summary

This event saw us working with our old friends the Leicesters, the Devons and the Hampshires (all British infantry) and fielding about 30 infantrymen for the 2 public battles - which included a Bren carrier, Dingo, half track. The battle commenced with a parachute drop and included 1 spitfire and 2 ME108 aircraft in a simulated air attack. A well organised event all round and a chance to meet up with many old friends.

The event this weekend is at Kelmarsh hall (Festival of History) - we will be presenting a "Infantry recruitment display" an equivelent of the modern army public relations teams - this event will see us working with our old friends the LHA, and in particular the Leicesters and the Devons (both are British infantry groups)

Following next is an event at the Rydale Folk Museum 26/27th July which will be a wedding and Murder Mystery Weekend. Sounds like it will be great fun.

Tatton Park June 2008

The group presented an after the battle scenario following on from Operation Mitten, the period just after the Battle for Château De La Londe. This involved the taking of Chateau De La Londe in late June 1944 and became know as 'the bloodiest square mile in Normandy'.

1940's Weekend - The Way We Were

Tatton Park is located just off Junction 19 of the M6 not far from Knutsford.

The group will be presenting an after the battle scenario following on from Operation Mitten. This involved the taking of Chateau De La Londe in late June 1944 and became know as 'the bloodiest square mile in Normandy'.

Long time East Yorks member Nick Wall reports he can be seen in the following clip between the 3rd and 6th second mark. Nick is the soldier in the FS cap and greatcoat talking to the seaman. Nick says it was a good experience and he could not have missed it as it was on his doorstep. The kit was all very good. Nick was issued Canadian trousers converted 49 pattern blouses copy greatcoat all wartime dated webbing and relined helmet. Nick took his own FS with an East Yorks badge in.

The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway 1940's Weekend was an excellent and well run event with lots of atmosphere and activity. A highlight was the attendance on Saturday of East Yorks veterans Alf Ackroyd and Dennis Peachey and members of their families. It was a real privilege to listen to Alf and Dennis' wartime experiences. On the Saturday evening there was a very enjoyable dance. On Sunday morning the East Yorks held a church parade with other groups joining in.

Eventplan Sheffield Fayre 26/27 August

Pictures and a short video of the East Yorkshire Regiment Living History Group at the Sheffield Fayre multi-period Eventplan 2007 event which had a large number of the public in attendance. The event featured rest area scenarios, weapons and firepower displays and mock battles finishing off with a march past of all the re-enactors.

The third and fourth photos are of Dennis Peachey and Alf Ackroyd both 2nd Battalion D-Day veterans, Alf was Dennis's corporal on D-DAY and Crich was the first time they had met since the war.

Some members of the group put on a display and participated in a battle at 'The Army in York' Open Day at Imphal Barracks, Fulford York. The East Yorks saved the day and won the battle!

Bussum Bridgehead, Holland. May 5th

These photo's were taken on the 5th May in Bussum Town centre and in the camp which is a dutch army training ground hence the ruins. This event celebrates the liberation of the town by British forces. Group members Hayden and Bill made the trip in a jeep.

23rd June Royal Armouries Leeds

The East Yorks, presenting Infantry and ATS uniform variations from 1939 to 1945, was one of a number of reenactment groups attending Veterans Day at the Leeds Royal Armouries to celebrate the contribution made by all those who have served in the Armed Forces and also the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who have served in support of operations.

16/17th June Operation Musketeer Renishaw Hall

The weather was kinder than forecast, especially on the Sunday, for this inaugural event at Renishaw Hall, near Sheffield. The East Yorkshire Regiment LHG put on an "in the field/re-supply area" scenario for the public along with a display of infantry weapons. Group photo by Tim Benton.

6th June - John Logie Baird Primary School

Here are some images of East Yorkshire Regiment LHG member Michael Lycett doing the school workshops on Wednesday 6th June at the Yorkshire Air Museum. The School was John Logie Baird Primary School from Helensburgh, Scotland. Head Teacher Mr W Miller said: 'We have been visiting York for many years and this is the best school visit we have ever had, the workshops were all to a very high standard'.

Blonde Bombshells of 1943

Haworth 1940's weekend

Here are some photos from the Haworth 1940's weekend. On the Saturday we were honoured to meet Dennis Peachey an original 10 Platoon 'B' Company East Yorkshire Regiment veteran (1940-1946) - a 2 inch mortar man who landed on D-Day and saw out the war with the East Yorks. The veteran in the light blue jacket is Arthur Lumb. He served in "A" company of the 2nd Battalion East Yorkshires, 18.06.1942 - 10.03.1947. He served in Miranshah on the Afghan Border. The veteran in the Dark blue jacket with his service medals is Vincent White. Vincent initially served in Infantry support anti tank in HQ company. Both he and Arthur witnessed the same incident during anti tank training at Inveraray.

Crich Tramway Museum 1940's Weekend

The first public event for the group was held at Crich Tramway Museum on Easter weekend. Here are a selection of photos and also a picture taken by Andrew Irving of East York Vet's and the living history group taken at the August 2006 event. Other photos are by Christine Mellor and Jane Irving. Veterans are (Left-right): Dennis Brown, Jack Reid (96 years old, Dunkirk & North West Europe veteran!), James "Jim" Walton, Horace Pinfold, Denis Cade (passed away October 2006) and John Gardiner.

Training Weekend 10/11th March

Activities for the weekend included the inaugural annual general meeting, planning events for 2007. We then went on to drill practice, rifle drill patrolling and hand grenade training. We also enjoyed good food, good drink and great company.

Thanks goes to the Yorkshire Air Museum which was an excellent period location for the weekend.
